Membership & Events Manager

Compensation: $33–$38/hour, DOE

The Role

The Membership & Events Manager is responsible for growing and supporting our membership and ensuring our events and communications run smoothly. This role works closely with the board and operates with a high level of independence. This position is ideal for someone who is highly organized, relationship-driven, comfortable with outreach and follow-up, and motivated by visible progress and results. This role is responsible for consistent membership growth through proactive outreach and follow-through.

Core Responsibilities

Membership Development & Relationships

  • Proactively identify and recruit new members

  • Lead outreach, follow-up, and relationship-building conversations

  • Clearly communicate the value of Better Portland membership

  • Track prospective and active members accurately and promptly

Member Services

  • Serve as the main point of contact for member questions

  • Ensure members feel informed, supported, and valued

Events

  • Coordinate events in partnership with the board

  • Support event promotion and logistics

  • Attend events and help ensure they run smoothly

Communications

  • Manage and send member newsletters

  • Manage Better Portland’s social media accounts

  • Ensure communications are timely, clear, and on-brand

Tracking & Coordination

  • Maintain accurate records using Google Workspace and membership software

  • Track memberships, payments, and event participation

  • Coordinate closely with the bookkeeper to ensure clean, up-to-date records

What We’re Looking For

  • Exceptionally organized with strong attention to detail

  • Disciplined about tracking, follow-up, and closing the loop

  • Comfortable initiating conversations, following up multiple times, and asking for commitment

  • Able to work independently with minimal oversight

  • Fast turnaround and strong follow-through

  • Clear, professional communicator

  • Cares deeply about Portland and the success of small and local businesses

Work Structure

  • Part-time employee, approximately 20 hours per week

  • Some evening availability required for events

  • Remote work, with in-person event attendance in Portland
